Profile - Ivan Kenny
I hold a Masters degree in Latin American Literature from the National University of Ireland Galway. From 2007 to 2009, I taught English in the faculties of Physiotherapy, Information Technology, Media/Cinema, and Philology at La Coruña University in Spain. I have also taught modules on a Translation Masters programme.
In 2007, I worked with a team from the Huston School of Film and Digital Media on the translation of a documentary entitled 12,000 Years of Blindness: this short film examines the acute problem of infant blindness caused by retinopathy of prematurity ( detached retina due to excessive oxygen administration) in Latin America, more specifically in Venezuela. My work involved the transcription and translation (Spanish - English) of all the interviews conducted for the documentary. This translation was used to facilitate the editing process and was also used for the final subtitles. Furthermore, as part of my work on the project, I translated an academic paper on media analysis: this was a complex document highlighting the hegemonic effect of state-run television companies on the general population in Venezuela.
From 1996 to 2001, I worked in the Radio Kerry production department as a voiceover artist and sound engineer. I also presented a wide variety of music and discussion programmes during my time there.
I have a keen interest in cinema and am currently preparing a PhD Thesis on Luis Buñuel.
